It aims to offer the industry it serves by advancing knowledge and guidance on
all aspects of ‘built-in' fire protection; providing technical support and
impartial advice; leading regulatory and behavioural change through industry
authority and improving competence and quality through training.
The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) will be welcoming
visitors to the ASFP Passive Fire Protection Zone; which brings together in one
location a number of ASFP member companies, representing a cross section of the
passive fire protection sector.
The Zone will allow visitors to gain a greater understanding of the essential
role of passive fire protection within today's built environment and offers
advice for all involved from designers, specifiers and contractors, to building
owners, risk assessors and facilities managers. It will encourage greater
cooperation at every stage of the design and build process and throughout the
life of a building.

Since 2009 Evaclite have been leading the research & development of Intelligent Active Dynamic Emergency Exit Signage.
Evaclite
have developed their patented, dynamic and adaptive emergency exit signs to only become
‘dynamic' (Green Arrow) or ‘adaptive' (Red Cross) during an alarm event.
In normal
use the signs replicate the “passive/static” emergency signage functionality.
The
active signs may look simple and indeed that was the intention of the design in
terms of being easy to understand, however our research led us to our signature
‘3PA dynamic control' which pulses an LED arrow within the arrow part of the
sign.
The LEDs
flash in a cycle of three steps to give the impression of a running sequence of
lights, reinforcing the directional information provided by the arrow.
The
flashing cycle starts (hence the ‘dynamic') only once the alarm is sounded,
ensuring that building occupants will not become too familiar with the concept
and thus reducing the likelihood of learned irrelevance.
Furthermore,
Evaclite signs are open protocol and can be connected to any Fire panel via a
suitable relay – in short, they are Fire Panel manufacturer agnostic they are
not part of ‘a closed solution' allowing for more cost-effective installation
as new or retrofit to an existing Fire panel and detector installation.
The
enhanced sign design also has the advantage of being the only ‘failsafe' and
fully compliant dynamic exit luminaire, since if the LEDs failed to operate,
the sign remains as a standard fully
compliant passive emergency exit sign.

What's new at the Fire Industry Association for
2019?
The Fire Industry
Association (FIA), Europe's largest trade association for the fire protection
sector, has lots of new and exciting things for visitors at FIREX.
Those visiting the
stand will be pleasantly delighted at the new and improved FIA Bar, where
guests can relax, unwind, have a drink, and catch up with new and old colleagues. It's a great space for networking
and a great space to meet with other members of the Association.
Membership of the FIA
has been growing at an exponential rate over the last year – over 800
companies nationwide are now members, with some joining from outside the UK.
Membership of the FIA has some excellent benefits – use of the FIA logo on all
your marketing materials such as your website and vehicles for added
credibility, discounts on British Standards and all FIA training and
qualifications, and access to exclusive members-only technical councils,
working groups, and events.
Known throughout the
industry as the hub of technical excellence, the FIA has a wealth of technical
expertise on a range of areas from fire detection and alarms, to extinguishing
systems, to fire risk assessment and more. If you have a technical question, visit
the FIA stand to have a chat with a technical manager who will be able to
provide you with technical advice and guidance.
Lastly, but certainly
not least, visit the FIA stand to have a chat about the qualifications that the
FIA has to offer. Qualifications are all Level 3 on the Regulated
Qualifications Framework (RQF), and will qualify a technician to design,
install, maintain, or commission fire detection and alarm systems.
Each qualification is
comprised of four units of study – the Foundation unit, Health and Safety,
Environmental, and one specialist advanced unit from a list of four options:
Designer, Installer, Maintainer, or Commissioner. The selection of the
specialist unit will determine the qualification gained (Installer gets you a
qualification in fire detection and alarm installation, and so forth).
New for 2019 is the
addition of an FIA ECS card – which lists all qualifications gained on the back
of the card and features the FIA logo.
The FIA will be
presenting a number of seminars at FIREX where you can learn more about the
qualification structure, topics studied, and any required pre-learning, as well
as the new FIA ECS card. You can also find out more about any of the above –
and pick up a prospectus – at the FIA bar, where FIA staff will be on hand to
explain the courses in detail and help you with any training requests.
